Deerdykes In-Vessel Compost Facility
Design and build contract to convert a redundant waste water treatment plant into an in-vessel compost facility
It is expected to take up to 45,000 tonnes per year of green waste and various wastes from industrial and commercial customers.
It is an excellent example of how existing sites and structures can be reused in a sustainable way by integrating new waste treatment facilities into existing infrastructure.
The design featured 4 concrete composting tunnels built in modified, original primary chambers, fully equipped with computer controlled in-floor aeration system.
All blowers, ancillary equipment and even the biofilter are placed on the roof of the tunnels to save space and allow future site expansion. The control room building was prefabricated off site complete with all equipment bringing forward the commissioning programme by some weeks.
The works included a portal framed building for pre-mixing the waste stream for optimum performance in the chambers.
SWWS has achieved PAS100 accreditation for the residual bagged compost that is hygienically safe for domestic garden use.
After opening by Ross Finnie SMP and Environment Minister, the site won the Award for Environmental Innovation from Eventful Scotland 2006
