Fort Dunlop Road Infrastructure

Advantage West Midlands are responsible for the redevelopment of the Fort Dunlop site in Birmingham. However, the access to the site required improvement to allow the full development of the available area for industrial use.

The new access road consisted of rebuilding 100m road and the construction of 350m of new road. The construction work was complicated by East Drive being the main access route for the adjacent Jaguar car factory. The new road was also the route for construction traffic to the new Mayflower pressing plant which was being erected during the contract period. Traffic management was therefore of the utmost importance.

The construction of the road included the installation of service trenches and connections, foul sewers, footpaths, lining, signage and lighting. All highway work was to adoptable standards by Birmingham City Council.

The road was also an important junction for the areas surface water system. A new 360m length of 1.5m diameter surface water sewer had to be installed at a depth of 4.5m with associated connection manholes. The installation of the surface water sewer was complicated by the presence of a 300mm diameter high pressure gas main to feed the nearby power station run by Rolls Royce.

Prior to the construction of the road the gas main had to be protected by the use of a light weight polystyrene filler and a reinforced concrete protection slab. Surface and foul sewers were constructed to adoptable standards by Severn Trent Water.
