Greengairs Landfill
The contract at Greengairs included the construction of a new basal cell, a mono-cell for stabilised non-reactive hazardous waste, permanent capping and temporary slop cover.
The basal cell 4B1 covered an area of 29,000m2 and included a composite liner of 1m thick compacted clay won from a borrow pit on the site, a 2mm welded HDPE geomembrane, geotextile protection and a 300mm thick layer of 20mm leachate drainage gravel. The monocell covered an area of 4,900m2 and had the same liner design, but with a thicker geotextile protection layer.
An area of 37,800m2 of the site required capping, using a 300mm regulation layer, a 1mm LLDPE welded geomembrane and 500mm thick layer of cover soils.
Temporary capping works were carried out on an area of 22,000m2 to reduce the surface water ingress into the waste mass.
All capping works included the provision of a surface water drainage system.
Greengairs is now the base for Ascot's long term partnering alliance in Scotland with WRG.
