Greengairs Landfill
 
The contract at Greengairs included the construction of a new basal cell, a mono-cell for stabilised non-reactive hazardous waste, permanent capping and temporary slop cover.
 
The basal cell 4B1 covered an area of 29,000m² and included a composite liner of 1m thick compacted clay won from a borrow pit on the site, a 2mm welded HDPE geomembrane, geotextile protection and a 300mm thick layer of 20mm leachate drainage gravel. The monocell covered an area of 4,900m² and had the same liner design, but with a thicker geotextile protection layer.
 
An area of 37,800m² of the site required capping, using a 300mm regulation layer, a 1mm LLDPE welded geomembrane and 500mm thick layer of cover soils.
 
Temporary capping works were carried out on an area of 22,000m² to reduce the surface water ingress into the waste mass.
 
All capping works included the provision of a surface water drainage system.
