Crawley Waste Transfer Station

Completed in 2006 this combined household waste recycling centre and waste transfer station is contained in a technically complex building with an unusual elliptically domed roof.

Making use of an existing site meant demolishing existing buildings, removing and diverting mains services, processing and recycling existing materials for construction use.

A major drainage system including precast culverts was installed to handle rainwater from the building, concrete paved areas and access road.

Temporary supports were needed during the structural steelwork erection to maintain stability during the early stages.

Ascot’s brief included design and installation of the M & E systems.

The building is designed to segregate waste into components such as; metals, green waste, paper, cardboard, plastics, bottles etc for recycling which diverts these items from landfill and meets government targets.

A joint liaison programme of quarterly meetings helped to keep the public informed.
