Ascot were appointed to complete the detailed design and construction of a 30,000 tonnes per year facility that converts green waste into compost and diverts it from landfill to meet government targets.
Built on a brownfield site close to existing houses, existing concrete slabs and foundations were recycled and reused to minimise importing new materials.
Green waste delivered from local parks, civic amenity sites and kerbside collections is converted into compost for re-use by the parks departments and for restoring the nearby landfill site.
The local environment is protected with a computerised SCADA system controlling both tunnel temperature and moisture levels with surplus vented air passing through an odour control unit. The automatic sprinkler system is an additional safety feature.
Should further capacity be required, a further six tunnels could be added to double capacity.
